Guidelines for Submitting Abstracts

Who May Submit An Abstract?

Any undergraduate or graduate KME member may submit an abstract, along with a cover letter from their advisor, for consideration as a talk at the regional convention.  The abstract may be co-authored.  If selected for presentation at the convention, the presentation must be made by one or more of the authors.  Abstracts which have been submitted for regional competition may also be submitted for national competition later.

Subject.

The material should be within the scope of understanding of undergraduates, preferably those who have only completed differential and integral calculus.  The Abstract Selection Committee will naturally favor abstracts within this limitation, and which can be presented with reasonable completeness within the time interval.  Abstracts should fall into one of the following areas:

  • Original research by the student(s);

  • Exposition of interesting but not widely known results;

  • Use of technology to engage students in the classroom and promote the study of mathematics.

Time Interval.

The presentation should be no longer than 20 minutes in length.  (The Abstract Selection Committee may change the time length if requested by the student.)

Form of Abstract.

The Abstract should be no more than 500 words.  A cover letter should be prepared which will include the title of the abstract, the student’s name(s) (which should not appear elsewhere in the abstract), student’s address and e-mail, student status (graduate or undergraduate), and a statement that the author is a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon, duly attested to by the corresponding secretary of the student’s chapter.

How to submit an Abstract.

Abstracts and cover letters may be sent via e-mail to Dr. Donna Marie Pirich at dpirich@sjcny.edu.
